About Wix

How do I change the URL on my Wix website?

Changing URLs on Wix is a straightforward process, whether you want to modify individual page URLs or your entire website domain. Here's everything you need to know.

Changing Individual Page URLs

To change the URL of a specific page on your Wix site:

  1. Log in to your Wix account and open the Wix Editor
  2. Click on Pages and Menu in the left sidebar
  3. Hover over the page you want to modify and click the More Actions icon (three dots)
  4. Select SEO Basics or navigate to SettingsSEO (Google) tab
  5. In the URL slug field, enter your new page URL (this is the part that appears after your domain name)
  6. Press Enter and click Publish to apply the changes

Wix automatically creates a 301 redirect from your old URL to the new one, which helps preserve your SEO rankings and ensures visitors using old links will still reach the correct page.

Changing Your URL Prefix (Free Wix Subdomain)

If you're using a free Wix plan with a subdomain like username.wixsite.com/sitename, you can change the prefix portion:

  • Navigate to your Account Settings by clicking the icon in the top right corner
  • Adjust your site URL prefix, which affects the first part of your free Wix domain URL

Note that this change applies to all sites under your account.

Changing Your Entire Website Domain

To completely change your website's domain name, you'll need a paid Wix premium plan. Once upgraded, you have two options:

  • Buy a new domain directly through Wix
  • Connect an existing domain you already own

After connecting a custom domain, your site URL will update to reflect your branded domain, replacing the Wix subdomain entirely. Keep in mind that DNS changes may take up to 48 hours to fully propagate across the internet.

Important Considerations

When setting page URL slugs, avoid using reserved paths like apps, api, robots.txt, or sitemap.xml as these can cause errors. Always choose descriptive, SEO-friendly URLs that clearly indicate what content visitors will find on each page.
